Peppermint is a very versitle Essential Oil. It has a sharp, menthol fragrance. It is said it is an analgesic, anesthetic, antispasmodic, astringent, decongestant, emmenagogue, expectorant, insecticide and stimulant. Peppermint needs to be kept away away from the eyes, and is likely to irritate skin and mucous membranes. It needs to be avoided by nursing mothers as it may discourage flow of milk. Homeopathic remedies may become in-effective if peppermint is used at the same time with them. Naturalists have said peppermint will relieve states of anger, hysteria and nervous trembling, excellent for mental fatigue and depression. It is said to be an unusual oil as it has a dual action, cooling the body when hot and warming it when cold. Many say peppermint is a valuable remedy for colds, and halts mucous and fevers and encourages perspiration. Peppermint is said to be extremely effective on the digestive system, has a slightly anesthetic effect on stomach muscles, that is is good for travel sickness, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, colic and nausea. It has stimulating qualities that have been used in times of shock, vertigo, anemia and dizziness. It is said that its cooling and pain relieving action eases headaches, migraines and toothaches. Scanty menstruation, painful periods and mastitis are said to respond well to this oil. As an insecticide, and to rid the place of vermin, not much is said to surpass the qualities of peppermint. Blends well with cedarwood, cypress, lavender, niaouli and pine.
